He graduated from Calvin College with a major in history and did graduate work in public opinion and propaganda at Michigan States University. During World War II, Byker served four and a half years (two and a half years with the Thirty-fourth Infantry Division). He was wounded three times in combat in North Africa and Italy. James S. Farnsworth was born on June 29, 1907 in Paw Paw, Mich. Before he became a state representative for the 54th District, he was an automobile dealer and then mayor of Otsego, Mich. He was also on the Allegan County Board of Supervisors and a delegate to the state constitutional convention. He was a member of the Plainwell Rotary Club and the Allegan Elks Lodge.
